Grout is rigid and does not tolerate flex, so a cracking line usually means the substrate deflects — an inadequate subfloor, missing uncoupling membrane, or a change of plane where a flexible caulk joint should have been used instead of grout. Regrouting the same line without addressing the movement means the same crack again within a year.

The tile has debonded from the substrate — the thinset either did not achieve full coverage when it was set, or the bond has failed. Patterns, herringbone, borders and niches all add labour. Substrate preparation, levelling and waterproofing are separate and substantial. A showcase tile at a low installed price usually means preparation has been priced out.

Cement-based grout does, periodically, particularly in showers and on floors — it is porous and stains and harbours mould without it. Epoxy grout does not, which is one reason it is used in wet areas despite being harder to install and more expensive. Sealing is straightforward homeowner maintenance and is the most commonly skipped step after a tile job.
